Course description

This two-day, 13 hour lecture and lab course is designed to prepare the participant to conduct an evidence-based assessment of an osteoporosis or osteopenic patient/client with the goal of designing an evidence based, individualized and progressive exercise program to decrease fall and fracture risk.

The introductory lecture describes relevant research on physical activity and aging and the medical management of osteoporosis. Emphasis throughout the course is placed on developing an evidence-based foundation of management of the total patient/client that includes relevant medical history, fracture status, clinical and functional status, and presence of co-morbidities, confidence and/or pain that may affect their exercise ability. Lab assessment sessions include measurements of postural assessment, clinical status and physical performance. Lab exercise sessions include demonstrations of exercises designed to improve posture, promote bone building, maximize function and decrease fall and fracture risk. Patient case studies will be used to assist the therapist in designing comprehensive exercise and education programs.

This course has been designed for the participant to immediately apply the information to their clinical setting.
