Course 5
Neurorehabilitation

Leyu Liu, Physiotherapist

Le Yu Liu, PT, MSc, is a licensed physiotherapist who graduated from McGill University in 2013. He has been working extensively in the neurological rehabilitation in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Currently Mr. Liu is obtaining a Ph.D degree in rehabilitation science under the supervision of Dr. Anouk Lamontagne at McGill University, and his research work focuses on the gait training post-stroke using virtual reality tools. His publications include “The effects of error-augmentation versus error-reduction paradigms in robotic therapy to enhance upper extremity performance and recovery post-stroke: a systematic review,” “Effects of real-time visual feedback in the form of a virtual avatar on symmetry and other parameters of gait post stroke,” “A real-time visual feedback protocol to improve symmetry of spatiotemporal factors of gait in stroke survivors” etc.
Mr. Liu is also working as a teaching assistant in the courses of ‘PT Neuro Rehabilitation’ and ‘Integrated Neuro Rehab’ at McGill University.
Course description
In this two-day lecture and lab course, the participants will learn about the administrative and scoring guidelines of the Chedoke-McMaster Stroke Assessment (CMSA). The lecture component includes information about the pathology of stroke, the CMSA development and psychometric properties and its clinical application. The lab component includes demonstration and practice of arm, hand, leg, foot, postural control and shoulder pain tasks. Throughout the course, the scoring competency of the participants is tested, and the instructor will provide verbal feedback to the participants’ performance. At the end of each day, treatment plans targeting different stages of recovery after stroke will be taught and discussed.
